While the radical feminist group Redstockings distributed newsletters and working papers-“mimeographed thunderbolts,” they called them-at its consciousness-raising meetings, Ladies’ Home Journal was publishing a regular advice column-“Can This Marriage Be Saved?”-in which male editors advised unhappy women, some of whom were stuck in abusive relationships, on how to be better wives. If the newsletter was the preferred form for revolutionary feminist publishing in the late 1960s, the glossy magazine was the form of the prevailing social order. The project was ambitious, quixotic, and, historically speaking, unusual. Letty Cottin Pogrebin thought a slick magazine could be “a stealth strategy to ‘normalize’ or ‘mainstream’ our message.” As a riposte to The New York Times, which until 1986 refused to refer to a woman by anything other than “Mrs.” or “Miss,” they decided to call their magazine Ms. But others hoped that a glossy magazine might strengthen the feminist movement. When it became clear that Steinem and others “wanted a glossy that would appeal to the women who read the Ladies’ Home Journal,” Gornick and her radical sisters bowed out. As Vivian Gornick recalled forty years later, “Radical feminists like me, Ellen Willis, and Jill Johnston…had a different kind of magazine in mind,” one that might argue against the institutions of marriage and motherhood. But the lawyer and activist Brenda Feigen suggested something different: “We should do a slick magazine,” something colorful and glossy that could be sold on newsstands nationwide. But what kind of publication would they create, and for what kind of reader? Steinem proposed a newsletter, the kind of low-budget, low-circulation flyer that many feminist groups in New York City favored. General-interest publications, also edited by men, were no better: according to Steinem, her editor at The New York Times Sunday Magazine rejected all her pitches for political stories, saying “something like, don’t think of you that way.’” Fed up and fired up, the journalists decided to start their own publication. When a group of female journalists gathered at Gloria Steinem’s uptown Manhattan apartment in the winter of 1971, they were facing a common problem: none of them could get “real stories about women published.” The male editors of the major women’s magazines-called the “seven sisters,” like the colleges-would not accept pitches that did anything other than advise readers to be better, happier, more productive housewives and mothers. "It's on growth.Nearly all revolutions start with a meeting. "The emphasis is not on revenue," he said. "My hope is that roughly 10 days before they get totally used to it and kind of blasé about it, before the honeymoon ends, bam, we hit them with a new feature," he said.įor example, Sifton said that Cooking is experimenting with a new "notes" feature that would seemingly straddle the line between a comments section and a Genius-style annotation platform.Īsked about the business side of things (there has been talk of possibly monetizing Cooking in some form), French said that focus is still on growing its audience across platforms. Sifton, the former Times restaurant critic, said that he wants to keep the app fresh, and to not stand still. The iPhone app, French said, "is much more practical in the way we designed it." Whereas the iPad app regales users with big, pretty pictures of food (some would call it "food porn"), the iPhone app has been optimized for search, and is intended make the task of deciding what to make for dinner, and actually making it, easier. "It just seemed like the next logical thing to do was to deliver an iPhone app to match the iPad app," Sifton said in an interview.īen French, who serves as product lead for Cooking and the NYT Now app, said that his team has carefully studied user behavior for both the website and the iPad: Users tend to use the desktop site during the day, and switch to the iPad version at night and on weekends, when they're presumably doing the bulk of their cooking. ( boasts three million unique visitors a month, a spokesperson said.) That app, and that website, have been successful, according to the Times. The Times debuted its dedicated Cooking website in beta in May, and released an iPad app as part of the official launch in September. Of the ones that do, many will sell them at a much higher price than you would get them at most retail outlets. This is because not all laundromats will sell laundry supplies. You may also want to check if they’re near any dollar stores or convenience stores. The next thing you might want to check is whether or not the laundromat sells laundry supplies. It might still happen, but there’s at least someone around to keep an eye on things and help ensure any problems are taken care of. However, if your nearest laundromat has staff on site, then there’s less of a chance of your possessions getting taken or molested. This means you would have to sit in the laundromat until your clothes are finished, just in case someone would take your clothes. This begs the question, how do you know that your clothes would be safe at such a place? They’re simply a room with washers and dryers, with someone (usually the owner) coming only to open, close, and change out the money. There are many laundromats that have no regular staff at all. The first thing you should look for is whether or not the laundromat is staffed. But with a bit of fore thought, you might find that there are a number of things you want in a laundromat. Many people, if they’re asked what they’re looking for in a laundry, will answer with a confused look or a statement of “a place to wash my clothes”. That will help you narrow down your search, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you know what you should be looking for. Or something like “ coin laundry near me that also sells laundry supplies”, if you’re hoping to also purchase things like detergent and fabric softener. Type in how many washing machines you’d be looking for, such as “laundromats near me with thirty machines or more”. Try narrowing your search to not just laundromats, but also the features you want. You might want to check a few more things. However, just because it’s close doesn’t mean it’s the best place to go. And if all you want is the laundromat to be near you, then you’re good to go. That will certainly get you the address of a few coin laundromats that are near you, perhaps some even in walking distance. That’s why it’s important you don’t just go to Google and type “24 hour laundromat near me” with “near me” being replaced by whatever your address is. This is important, because you don’t want to just find a coin laundry near me. However, many people don’t realize that they’re not using Google right. It’s simply easier to check your phone or your tablet and find out where a nearby business is. This is because of how common internet capable devices are in this day and age. Most people use Google to find information on local businesses these days. Using The Internet To Find A Laundry Near Me Because not all laundromats are made equal. There are a few ways you can find one, and there are a few things you should look for when you’re considering whether or not to use one. If you’re in any of these situations, then you may have had reason to wonder “is there a laundromat near me?” It’s a valid question when you don’t have one in your home or apartment. There are people who either live in an apartment building without a washer and dryer hookup in each unit, or simply live in a house with several roommates and need to wash their clothes immediately. While there are many people throughout the United States who can afford to have a washing machine and dryer in their homes, there are many more who can’t. They also have vending machines with snacks like chips and candy bars so you do not have to leave your workstation when you want something light but filling.Finding The Right Laundromat Is More Than Google Searching “24 Hour Laundromat Near Me” Laundromats offer many conveniences like 24/7 availability coin-operated machines free Wi-Fi self-serve drying racks that allow customers to dry clothes while they do other things like fold laundry or watch TV free soap and fabric softener dispensers where you just need quarters instead of coins. There are many different types of laundromats including industrial, apartment building or college dormitory-style, mom-and-pop family business style, and supermarket-style which offer coin-operated machines that offer detergent only. For example, if someone works the night shift or is on vacation and needs to wash clothing in the morning, it would be inconvenient for them to go all the way home first before going to a laundromat. Laundromats are also good for people who need to do their laundry at odd hours. Laundromats are a convenient and quick way to clean clothes, especially during emergencies. I at least expected both groups to stack in a clover leaf fashion, but only one out of the two, five shot groups accomplished that. Well that was an unfortunate failure also. What’s even worse is I attempted two 25 yard groups, expecting the results to be somewhat better. I can’t tell you how much that aggravates me….! I certainly want another round on the market comparable to my coveted Eley Green Box Subsonic, and even Eley screwed that up with the White Box edition. Best Group out of the ten groups I shotĪnd finally all the groups together, just so you know I’m being honest about my results, and not trying to trash CCI Subsonic. I certainly had my hopes up for this ammo, as it’s quite cost effective ($6.50/100), and has a great hollow point cavity. It’s not gonna be a contender for the eastern gray squirrel out of any of my rifles…. I will say that for larger targets like groundhogs, past 50 yards, you could use this round. However I didn’t let the groups stop there. Sadly, from the results of the 10 shot group, this round doesn’t appear to be a contender for squirrel gettin’ duties…. A 10 shot group at 50 yards to start, warms up the barrel and gives me an idea of how this ammo is going to perform. I started with cleaning the barrel with a Hoppe’s #9 soaked patch with one pass, and then putting a dry patch in behind it to start with a unseasoned bore. Here are the results for the first 10 shots: You’ll see in this list of speeds that the 1099 FPS speed barrier was broken, and the auditory report was such that even with a suppressor I was able to make out the supersonic crack down range. I’m a bit of a freak when it comes to squirrel hunting, and I will attempt a shot longer than 50 yards if I have the clearance, and the stability to make such a shot. Knowing this I always want to start with chronograph data so that I have data to plug into iStrelok for holdovers in the woods. These are only what I look for, and may not match how you evaluate your ammunition selection. Must place five shots inside a penny or.My standards for subsonic hollow-point are: I do all my testing at 50 yards for groups that pass my standards. I picked this CCI Subsonic up at to test out to see if it was a worthy contender for squirrel in the fall season. My current favorite is the Green Box Eley Subsonic, which has sadly been replaced with the less accurate White Box Eley Subsonic. Alas, the search for a accurate, subsonic, hollow-point continues on for us squirrel hunters that want to be quiet, accurate, and lethal in the same combo. This amazing feat can be accomplished in several ways : magical spells, magic powers of a talisman, divine intervention (whether for good or bad intention), or, that’s just the nature of the mythological beast. Shamen Shapeshifter by Stephanie Lostimolo 2012 The new DeWalt 12v XR tools must be some of the lightest they’ve ever made: the DCF601, for example, comes in at just 680g excluding battery! They’re compact too – shortened batteries and body lengths mean they can get into cramped spaces with ease. The primary advantage of 10.8v and 12v tools is that they can be made smaller and lighter than their 18v cousins, and they are a popular choice when it comes to working overhead, in tight spaces, and for lighter duty jobs where you don’t need to carry a larger machine around with you. Reduced Size & Weight Dewalt 12v XR tools are compact and lightweight DeWalt say you can expect around a 20% increase in runtime compared to the brushed 10.8v models. Without these solid carbon components continuously rubbing against the commutator, less energy is lost to heat and friction and more power gets to the drivetrain, meaning you can get more work done before the battery is drained. Controlled electronically rather than via the carbon brushes that were fitted as standard on the 10.8v range, these motors tend to be smaller and lighter but they are also much more energy efficient. To take full advantage of these battery packs, all the new DeWalt 12v XR tools are fitted with brushless motors. This helps to eliminate any guesswork before starting a job and has no doubt been a much-requested feature which brings them more in line with the bigger batteries from the 18v & 54v ranges. 12v Batteries The new DeWalt 12v XR Battery features a charge indicatorĪt time of writing the new 12v batteries are available in capacities of 2.0ah or 3.0ah, and probably the most notable addition that sets them apart from the previous generation is a charge indicator which lets you check how much power is left inside the battery simply by pressing a button. But are there many differences between the two ranges? Although designed for compatibility with the previous generation of tools and batteries, the new DeWalt 12v range also benefits from a number of updates which we’ll take a look at next. And users already on the existing 10.8v platform now have much more choice when it comes to upgrading their system. That means that the old 10.8v batteries will work in the new 12v tools and vice versa. “But hang on a minute” you may be saying (especially if you’ve already invested in the tools, batteries and chargers) “what happened to the 10.8v range?” Well the good news is that both the 10.8v and 12v ranges share battery and charger compatibility. This article will run through each of the new DeWalt 12v XR tools in detail and an overview of the system in general.
